The End of an Era:
Porsche 718 Bids Farewell to Europe

Can you believe it? The Porsche Cayman and Boxster are dead in Europe.

The automotive world is in a state of transition, and nowhere is this more evident than in Europe, where the beloved Porsche 718 has met its demise. The Cayman and Boxster models, cherished by enthusiasts for their impeccable handling and thrilling driving experience, are now casualties of the European Union’s stringent “cybersecurity” regulations.

These regulations have already claimed the gasoline-powered Macan SUV, and now they extend their reach to Porsche’s best driver’s car that isn’t the 911.

Regulatory Overhaul and the Fall of Icons

News of the Porsche 718’s departure from Europe came via Motor1, following discussions in the German press.

Spokesperson Oliver Hilger confirmed that the 718 was finished in Europe, marking a significant shift for the iconic model. However, not all is lost for Porsche purists. The Cayman GT4 RS and Boxster Spyder RS will remain available, as their limited production numbers exempt them from the new regulations. Unfortunately, the majority of consumers will not have this luxury and must adhere to the EU’s cybersecurity protocols.

The root cause of this shift lies in the new regulations demanding that all vehicles support a suite of “Advanced Driver Assistance Systems” (ADAS). While the European Union frames these regulations as safety and anti-hacking measures, there is substantial debate about their actual efficacy. Many drivers find these systems intrusive and unreliable, and studies suggest they may foster complacency behind the wheel.

Vehicles not connected to the internet are inherently secure from remote hacking—a point seemingly overlooked in the regulatory framework.

The Transition to Electric

Porsche has decided that updating the 718 to comply with these regulations is not a viable investment, especially when these models can still be sold in other markets like the USA.

The current plan is to phase out the gasoline-powered 718 and Macan models as electric versions are introduced. The next-generation 718, slated for a 2025 release, will be purely electric, and the two generations will coexist for an unspecified period.

The fourth-generation Boxster/Cayman, which debuted in 2016 under the “982” internal codename, is being retired from the EU market, but its absence is not expected to impact Porsche’s sales significantly. The Macan, introduced in 2014, has been a strong seller globally, with 87,355 units sold in 2023 alone.

This robust performance underscores the challenge and opportunity in transitioning to electric vehicles while maintaining brand loyalty and market share.

A Nod to Enthusiasts

This transition marks a poignant moment for car enthusiasts, particularly those who value the visceral experience of driving a gasoline-powered Porsche.

As engine sizes shrink and automotive technology evolves, many feel nostalgic for the simpler times when performance and driving pleasure were paramount. The retirement of the 718 in Europe is a reminder of the broader changes sweeping the automotive industry.
