Surprise, Surprise: Porsche Sets Another Lap Record
Porsche doesn’t make any “slow” vehicles these days. Now, Porsche didn’t make any “slow” vehicles in the past, either, if you consider that the term “slow” is entirely relative. If that’s enough quotation marks for you in two sentences, then you’ll be delighted to know that everything we’ve written below is quotation mark-free.
In all seriousness, compared to most car manufacturers, Porsche doesn’t produce and sell any new models that are objectively slow — that is, if you’re not comparing Porsche to exotic supercar brands like Ferrari or Lamborghini. Of course, Volkswagen owns Porsche and Lamborghini, so they’re one and the same, right?
Maybe, maybe not. But Lamborghini didn’t recently break a track lap record with a production vehicle, something that’s almost always a big deal in the car enthusiast community. Porsche broke the lap record for the fastest production car at Wisconsin’s famous Road America. They did it with the new 911 GT2 RS, and they absolutely smashed the pre-existing record.
Our Porsche Repair Specialists In Encino Weigh In On The Matter
So, why would an independent Porsche repair shop in Encino like HOUSE Automotive care about such a record-breaking feat? In truth, we don’t get to service 911 GT2s and GT3s very often (though, when we do, we tend to get very excited about it). We’re simply proud of the one-and-only automotive brand that we service, and we consider every accomplishment that the brand achieves to be an extension of our own hard work. We think that’s fair.
The Details
Professional driver David Donohue, son of Talladega speed legend Mark Donohue, set a mind-blowing 2:15:17 track time on a clear, sunny day. This official lap record attempt was set with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R N0 tires that were specifically developed for the GT2 RS. These tires are so absurdly expensive and precision-engineered that you could probably put a down payment on a home with them.
What’s The Big Deal?
Admittedly, Donohue’s lap record was only set by a margin of fewer than two seconds. But when you consider that track laps often come down to a margin of mere milliseconds, shaving nearly two seconds off of the record time is a huge deal. The previous lap record for a production vehicle at Road America was set by Bryan Sellers in a factory GT3 RS running the same tire setup as the GT2. The time was 2:18:57, still extremely impressive by all accounts.
Porsche is no stranger to breaking lap records at any track around the world, and they’re certainly no stranger to breaking lap records that were set by other Porsches. It’s German engineering at its finest, improve and perfect what seemed to be unimprovable and imperfectible.
